Success in Balance

Grrr! Failing Up

Someone really smart once said that “luck is what happens when preparation meets opportunity.”That’s not a bad way of looking at things. So stay prepared. Don’t give up hope, but at the same time don’t just hope.

Mediocrity is something I see all around me and something I am so frustrated with. So as I read this article I was relieved to see I am not the only one. It seems that as Americans we are are too complacent with things as they are. Why should we work harder for a better life when we already have a pretty good one without working? Why should we risk something to get something more when what we have is already pretty good. There is a balance that we need to achieve. We need to realize that what we already have is pretty darn good and enjoy it, but also continue striving to make ourselves better. Many of us want to make ourselves better if it is not inconvenient. But to truly live you have to step out of your comfort zone and do something about it. You have to take a risk.

Check out that article and see if you agree.

Opportunities I am exploring

January 27th, 2006

I just updated the opportunities section with some opportunities I think have some potential. Sure there’s some risk, but I am not betting the farm. My goal is to see if I can take a little money and leverage it to make it quite a bit more. My plan is to document the journey here. So far I have not received any $, but it has only been a short time. I’ll keep you posted!

Coming Soon!

January 12th, 2006

As you can see I have changed the SiB site to something easier to manage. As the original site served primarily as a blog, I figured why not go with it. This site will be more of a blog and I will post my thoughts as I attempt to achieve success in balance with the rest of my life. I will also create a forum where users can discuss issues if there is a need, but for now the comments should work.

Grace & Peace!

Fear of Failure?

January 11th, 2006

I was reading a post on Success and Motivation over at Blog Maverick, The Mark Cuban Weblog and was struck with a thought that I have had many times. Here is one quote from the article:

In Business, the odds are a little different. You don’t have to break the Mendoza line (hitting .200). In fact, it doesnt matter how many times you strike out. In business, to be a success, you only have to be right once.

One single solitary time and you are set for life. That’s the beauty of the business world.

So in business you can be a success even after failing many times and I think the same is true in life, to a point. In order to have a successful marriage I need to show my love for my wife in many ways. Many times this works and often times I fall flat on my face…just ask her :-) But the bottom line is I keep trying and I keep looking for new ways to show my wife that I love her. This also applies to my kids and other areas of life as well.

So to a point success in balance is also failure in balance. The key is to keep trying and keep learning. After reading Mark’s comments I feel a bit more adventurous, a bit more willing to take an educated risk.

What do you think? Feel free to share your thoughts in our discussion area. Go ahead, take the risk, some day someone will and it might as well be you :-)

Thoughts on Time Management

January 5th, 2006

I was talking with someone earlier today about some things I have learned over the years about Time Management. After our discussion I reflected on what it all means. Time Management is life management. Time is the only thing we can really invest of ourselves in this life and once time is gone, life is gone.

For me there have been two very influential books. The first is First Things First, by Stephen Covey. The second compliments the first. It is Getting Things Done by David Allen. Why do I say these books compliment each other? Because they each have different focuses. FTF teaches you how to see what is most important in your life. Key concepts I use from Covey are the concepts of Roles, Mission, and Values. These things drive what I do. GTD on the other hand helps me get things done. Key concepts here are to close the loops, the two-minute rule, and have a system you can trust. Now these are obviously oversimplifications. But when I apply these life just gets better. I am being productive and on the right things. I have Success in Balance with the rest of my life.

What about you? What works for you? Have you found these books useful as well? Are there other books resources you use? Share them with others in our discussion area.
